University of Manchester East Asia Centre Programme Masterclass Recap:
Redefining Educational Leadership
On 26th February, the University of Manchester East Asia Centre in Hong Kong hosted a thought-provoking session titled “What of (Educational) Leadership?”. The event featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Paul Armstrong and Dr. Bee Hughes from the University of Manchester who engaged participants in an insightful discussion on how educational leadership continues to evolve through research, reflection, and collaborative practice.
The session explored the shifting expectations and emerging challenges faced by education professionals today. Both speakers emphasized the importance of evidence-based leadership, highlighting how reflective practice, collaboration, and community engagement are key to achieving sustainable improvement in educational settings.
Dr. Paul Armstrong also introduced the Centre’s signature programme, the MA Educational Leadership in Practice, which aligns with the themes discussed. Tailored for practising educators, the programme offers a part-time blended learning format that combines online teaching with opportunities for in-person engagement. Students are invited to attend non-credit bearing conferences twice a year at the East Asia Centre in Hong Kong or other global centres, including Singapore, providing valuable opportunities for networking and professional growth.
A current student shared his experience of how the “in practice” component of the programme has shaped his professional thinking. He reflected on becoming a more critical and self-aware leader, able to connect theory to real-world practice. The flexible study model, he added, allows him to integrate his learning with his demanding work schedule.
