FAQ

Why Manchester vs. Other Hong Kong Universities: 1-2

Admissions & Entry Requirements: 3-8

Fees, Scheduling & Flexibility: 9-14

Curriculum & Evaluation: 15-17

Prestige, Authenticity & Career Outcomes: 18-21

1. Why should I choose the Manchester Global Part-time MBA over traditional MBA programmes offered by local Hong Kong universities?

The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA offers five distinct structural and academic advantages over traditional public university MBA programs in Hong Kong, which rely heavily on localized evening schedules, structured semesters, and high-pressure written exams:

  • 100% Coursework and Group Presentations (Zero Written Examinations): Traditional MBA programs at local Hong Kong universities assess students through high-pressure written examination blocks. Aligning with the hands-on philosophy of the "Manchester Method," our program eliminates traditional exam-hall testing entirely. Instead, you are evaluated through practical coursework assignments and collaborative group presentations that focus on live corporate challenges, allowing you to directly apply your learning to your workplace.
  • The Only Dedicated, Permanent UK Campus in Hong Kong: The University of Manchester operates its own permanent physical facility in Causeway Bay. This guarantees real-time local administrative support and dedicated learning infrastructure.
  • An UK Degree Certificate with No Regional Label: Local university degrees naturally list a local institution. The University of Manchester awards a Master of Business Administration parchment issued directly from our home institution in the United Kingdom. It is 100% identical to the UK on-campus award.
  • True Global Mobility Across Five International Hubs: Public universities restrict your network and classes to a single local city. The University of Manchester allows you to seamlessly attend physical workshops across our entire global network of hubs—including Manchester, Dubai, Shanghai, and Singapore—giving you massive cross-border networking opportunities.
  • The "Manchester Method": Instead of passive textbook memorization and theory-heavy lectures, our world-renowned "learning by doing" framework utilizes a flexible hybrid model combining 85-90%autonomous digital study with 10-15% mandatory face-to-face workshop residentials. This structural balance allows executive students to master online coursework at their own pace while still engaging in high-impact, in-person corporate problem-solving that can be directly implemented in the workplace the very next morning.
2. Why should I choose the University of Manchester over other regional business schools?

The University of Manchester is ranked among the world's top 40 institutions, holds the prestigious Triple-Crown Accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB), and is the only UK higher education institution in Hong Kong to operate its own dedicated physical campus with permanent local staff and learning facilities.

Enrolling at our Causeway Bay centre provides unique structural and academic advantages that local or distance-learning programs cannot match:

  • The Only Dedicated UK Physical Campus in HK: Unlike other overseas universities that merely rent temporary hotel conference rooms or partner with local sub-contracted tutorial schools, The University of Manchester East Asia Centre is a permanent, fully staffed campus. We provide direct on-site administrative support, student services, and elite learning infrastructure right here in Hong Kong.
  • 100% UK Degree Certificate: The graduation parchment and official academic transcripts are issued directly by the home institution in the United Kingdom. Your degree certificate is completely identical to our UK on-campus award.
  • Over 30 Years of Local Presence: The University of Manchester has maintained a continuous, dedicated footprint in Hong Kong since 1992, creating a deep ecosystem of corporate partnerships across the East Asia region.
  • Research-Led Faculty from the UK: You are not taught by part-time local tutors. World-class professors travel directly from the UK to Hong Kong to deliver our high-impact weekend workshops, ensuring you learn from the top researchers who author the industry textbooks.

3. What are the admission criteria for the Global Part-time MBA?

The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA admission criteria standardly require a recognized bachelor's degree with three years of professional experience, while concurrently offering a non-degree entry route for exceptional candidates with a minimum of 10 years of robust managerial work experience. The admissions committee at The University of Manchester evaluates all applicants holistically based on demonstrated corporate achievements, leadership potential, career progression, and strong English communication skills.

4. Is the GMAT or GRE score a mandatory requirement for application?

No, the GMAT or GRE score is not a mandatory requirement for admission to The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA program; instead, applicants complete the Manchester Admissions Test—a 45-minute online assessment of verbal, numerical, and logical ability for which practice tests are available upon request. Since the practical executive curriculum focuses on applied management capabilities rather than standard exam memorization, this targeted evaluation replaces traditional graduate testing.

5. How does the Global Part-time MBA differ from the Global Executive MBA (GEMBA)?

The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA is designed for mid-career managers looking to accelerate into general management, whereas the Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) targets senior directors and C-suite leaders focusing on macro global business strategy. While both tracks award an identical, triple-accredited Master of Business Administration degree from The University of Manchester, they differ across key parameters:

  • Cohort Seniority: The Global Part-time MBA averages 10 to 14 years of professional experience, while the GEMBA requires a more mature profile with extensive executive or entrepreneurial leadership background.
  • Format Structure: The Manchester Global Part-time MBA is delivered primarily through online learning, with approximately 85–90% of study undertaken online and 10–15% through face-to-face workshops (28 days in total). In comparison, the Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) includes a slightly higher level of in-person engagement, with approximately 80–85% online learning and 15–20% face-to-face workshops (32 days in total).
6. Can I apply for the programme if I do not hold a standard university degree?

Yes, candidates without a primary bachelor's degree can apply for The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA via the professional entry route if they possess a minimum of 10 years of robust managerial, executive, or entrepreneurial experience. The University of Manchester recognizes that exceptional business leadership can be developed through extensive corporate experience, allowing practical achievements to stand in place of formal academic credentials.

7. Am I a suitable candidate for this programme if I am in my early 30s, or conversely, a senior executive?

Yes, the University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA cohort accommodates both mid-career professionals in their early 30s and senior directors or business owners in their late 40s and 50s. Ambitious managers in their 30s use this program from The University of Manchester to accelerate their transition into strategic leadership, while senior executives benefit from refreshing their strategic frameworks and exchanging cross-functional insights with a mature peer group.

8. What is the typical demographic and industry profile of the student cohort?

The typical student cohort at The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA possesses an average of 10 to 14 years of professional work experience and holds significant managerial responsibilities. The student profile at The University of Manchester is highly international and spans diverse industries, including banking and finance, technology, healthcare, logistics, engineering, construction, and the public sector.

Reflecting the global nature of the programme, students join us from a wide range of regions:

  • Hong Kong: ~38%
  • Taiwan: ~15%
  • Japan: ~15%
  • South Korea: ~12%
  • Other Regions: ~20%

(Data based on the January 2026 MBA intake)

9. What is the total tuition fee structure, and are financial installments available?

The tuition fees for The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA can be paid in flexible interest-free instalments, allowing students to spread the cost over 4 instalments or 12 instalments, and 3 instalments for the accelerated pathways. All tuition fees include full access to online learning materials, university digital library resources, and attendance at all mandatory face-to-face workshop residentials. For HK permanent residents, the programme is eligible for HK Government’s ENLS (low-interest education loan scheme)

10. How long is the programme duration, and what is the expected weekly time commitment?

The standard pathway for The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA is completed in 24 months, with accelerated 18-month tracks available at The University of Manchester for qualified finance and accounting professionals. Working managers enrolled at The University of Manchester should expect to allocate approximately 10 to 15 hours per week to independent study, interactive online learning platforms, and group project collaborations.

11. Can I complete the degree entirely online, or is physical attendance required?

No, The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA cannot be completed entirely online; it utilizes a hybrid blended learning model combining 85-90% autonomous digital study with 10-15% mandatory face-to-face workshop residentials. Approximately 28 days of physical attendance is required over the course of the program, with each face-to-face workshop lasting between 3 to 6 days.

12. What happens if an unexpected business trip or corporate crisis conflicts with a local workshop?

If a critical business trip or corporate relocation conflicts with a workshop block at The University of Manchester East Asia Centre in Hong Kong, students can request to attend the identical module seamlessly at any other international hub across Manchester, Dubai, Shanghai, and Singapore. To provide further flexibility for busy executives, the program also offers the following options:

  • Online & Deferral Options: There are online options available for some courses, as well as the ability to defer individual courses to another semester.
  • Study Interruptions: Students have the option to take formal interruptions to pause all studies for half a year, up to 2 times.
  • 5-Year Maximum Window: The maximum study time allowed is 5 years, with absolutely no extra costs if you take that long to complete the program.

13. I maintain a highly demanding professional schedule; how does the programme accommodate busy executives?

The University of Manchester Global Part-time MBA accommodates busy executives by utilizing a highly flexible blended learning model that requires physical attendance at face-to-face workshop residentials only once every 2 to 3 months. These sessions are structured as intensive, multi-day blocks—spanning consecutive weekdays and weekends—rather than stretching across long semesters, allowing corporate professionals to plan their calendars well in advance.

To create a flexible learning environment for students with full-time jobs we provide below alternative methods for the face-to-face workshops:

  • Alternative Assignment : The workshop alternative assignments will cover the same intended learning outcomes and carry the same weight as the workshop assignment they replace. The workshop alternative assignment will usually be carried out as an individual assignment. However, students are limited to doing two alternative assignments throughout their GMBA studies.
  • Defer course(s) : Deferring your course to a later term can be an option. This way, you will be studying 1-2 module per term which can help prevent feeling overwhelmed.  However, please note that your programme may/will be extended.
  • Interruption : When a student is not enrolled in any course during the term, it is considered an interruption. An interruption allows students to take a break from their studies for 1 or 2 terms. Please note that in line with the University’s Interruption Policy, the total period of interruption must not normally exceed 12 months.

14. Can I switch centres if I relocate during my studies?

Yes. The University of Manchester’s global network allows you to seamlessly transfer your home centre if you undergo a permanent corporate relocation or personal move during the programme. Because the Global Part-time MBA shares an identical curriculum and structure worldwide, you can smoothly transition your administrative base across our five global locations, ensuring zero disruption to your studies.

The global centres are located in:

  • Manchester, United Kingdom (Home Campus)
  • Hong Kong (East Asia Centre)
  • Singapore (South East Asia Centre)
  • Shanghai (China Centre)
  • Dubai (Middle East Centre)

  • Seamless Administrative Transfer: If you relocate to another country, you can officially transfer your student registration to the nearest regional centre without needing to re-apply or restart your modules.
  • Identical Academic Standards: Regardless of which global centre becomes your new home base, you will study the exact same course content, learn from the same visiting UK academics, and graduate with the identical University of Manchester MBA degree certificate.
  • Global Hub Flexibility: Even if your relocation is only temporary, our flexible blended learning model enables you to book and attend physical workshop blocks across these international locations to align with your changing business travel schedule.

15. How does the "Manchester Method" differ from traditional teaching methodologies?

The "Manchester Method" at The University of Manchester replaces passive textbook memorization with a practice-based, reflective learning framework focused heavily on group dynamics and live corporate scenarios. This approach by The University of Manchester trains students to apply rigorous management theories directly to operational challenges, producing highly employable MBAs capable of leading cross-functional corporate initiatives.

16. Does the Manchester Global MBA require traditional written examinations or a thesis?
